Benjamín de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia Winery

The architecture of the winery responds to a preliminary and basic idea of respect and sensitivity to the environment and landscape. This is done by dividing the building into smaller pieces, as opposed to one.

It appears as three separate volumes but strongly related between one another. Each of these buildings represents and hosts a major activity of the winery: Development, Aging and Expedition.

Each volume is identified by a basic element of nature; Development represents “Water”, Ageing represents “Earth” and Expedition represents “Sun”. There are three basic elements of a vineyard: water, earth, and sun. Thus, from its inception, the winery has a strong commitment to sustainability in terms of reducing consumption, emission of greenhouse gases, waste disposal, and electricity consumption. These are necessary conditions to obtain an “Environmental Qualification” and this also makes the building a possible candidate as a Calener, Leed and Green Building
